This fictional AEC Matador is typical of the recovery vehicles used by many bus companies from the early post war years through to the 1980s. Designed as an artillery tractor, the four-wheel drive AEC Matador served in various specialised roles during the second world war. Well regarded, it was highly sought after when disposed of by government war-surplus sales. This particular example was converted into a recovery vehicle by the Lancashire United Company and photographed at the Manchester Museum of Transport in the mid 1980s. I have no record of Cleveland Transit or its predecessors owing such a vehicle, but it certainly looks the part (22-Apr-11).
