New in 1957, 174 DHN (fleet number BU 501) was the first of a large fleet of ECW-bodied Bristol MWs operated by United Automobile Services in County Durham, North Yorkshire and Northumberland. The MW was a conventional body-on-chassis design that weighted little more than the preceding semi-integral LS. The standard Eastern Coachworks service bus body seated 45 passengers, as was usual for the time. The first examples featured a particularly upright rear end and omitted the usual ECW moulded waistrail. Alongside is 517 LHN (BUE 517), a 1959 Bristol MW with coach-seated ECW 'express' body (05-Oct-2019).
