For this image, I can do no better than quote from Alan Townsin and Brian Gouldings' book 80 Years of AEC: "The Australian branches of several British automobile concerns, both car and commercial, always tended to be a law unto themselves. In 1964, a couple of years after the merger of AEC into the Leyland Group, and before any significant sign of rationalisation of the truck range of the combined group became evident in Britain, AEC Australia introduced what was called the Mustang, model LGM4RA, marrying what amounted to a Mercury range chassis with AV470 engine and the LAD cab familiar on the Leyland Comet and heavy-duty goods ranges, many Albion and Dodge models but not elsewhere on an AEC. A six-speed gearbox and two-speed differential gave the speed range needed for Australian conditions. In Britain, the Mustang name had been applied to a twin-steer derivative of the Mercury range". I have no evidence to suggest that Mayne Nickless operated the type - information about this notable Australian haulier would be welcome (16-Jan-18).
