Australia was a key export market for British trucks prior to its domination by American manufacturers. Western Transport was established in the early 1930s with one truck carrying general freight from Brisbane to Toowoomba. It grew into Australia’s largest and most respected road transport company throughout the 1950s, 60s and 70s. At its peak, the company serviced every mainland state with depots in Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth and Darwin, with a fleet of over 500 units - the largest in Australia. In 1963, its parent company entered into a partnership with Mack Truck, forming Mack Trucks Australia and ending the company's association with British trucks. Road Trains were introduced in the 1960s, hauling general freight, oilfield and mining equipment, and pipelines. In 1972, Western Transport was sold to Bell Brothers from West Australia, closing an important chapter in the development of road transport in Australia.
