Mid-winter of 2017 there was a snowy owl that wintered on a farm in Bradford County, NY, about an hour drive from my home. I'd already been down once or twice. One evening, about two hours before sunset, I drove down again, parking on the road near the farm where it had been seen. The snowy was maybe 200+ yards out. I busied myself with pulling out my 2x teleconverter with my 500mm lens and then slung it back out the window. Then I saw it, this short-eared owl had caught a vole and was eating it only about 30 yards from my jeep. Pretty remarkable, especially considering this was the very first short-eared owl I had ever seen! That was a very busy time for me as I was preparing for a trip to Africa and I had made only one copy of the images. Shortly after returning from Africa, the drive with images from my SEO encounter became corrupted. The drive wasn't recognized by any PC that I tried. I set it aside, occasionally pulling it out to ensure that, no, I was right, it couldn't be seen. Then last Monday, 3.5 years later, I had a memory card issue after another amazing photo op resulting in complete wipe of another amazing encounter. I purchased restoration software and magically, I was able to restore Monday's images! This weekend I thought about this device from 2017 containing the SEO images. I plugged it in, pulled up the software, and there it was. Every single image from that incredible SEO shoot was there! Three years later, my error that resulted in nearly losing photos last Monday not only restored those photos, but also so many images and memories that I had lost from three years before. Serendipity reigns supreme! Oh, and never give up and NEVER EVER throw away a memory card. A blog is forthcoming. January 2017
