On April 8, 2024, a group of ten of us converged on Lake Boutin in Trail of Tears State Park near Jackson, Missouri, to view the solar eclipse. I had scouted out this area weeks in advance. The lake is located very close to the center line of totality and met all of our criteria (open sky, easy access and, most importantly, restroom facilities). Many of us had previously met at Eagle Bluffs Conservation Area near Columbia, Missouri, for the 2017 solar eclipse, so we had our game plan well organized for this second go around. My friend Jane, who is a professional Mizzou tailgater, prepared a wide assortment of wonderful eclipse inspired foods and beverages, and we had enough camera gear to photograph a space launch.

Unlike 2017, I took some time not just to photograph the eclipse (which was spectacular), but also to photograph the people around us. We met some very interesting and wonderful people. Everyone was friendly. Despite coming from different parts of the country (and I’m sure with different political, religious and social views), we were all there to share a common interest in something which we will not be able to see again in our area of the world for another 20 years - - August 23, 2044. Our group is already making plans to get together for that one.
