Arriving in France for the second half of my expedition. I was first on and last off the ferry, and had to wait for an car to escort my out of the port so that I didn't get flattened by a lorry!

The Burghers of Calais were sculpted by Auguste Rodin in 1895. They commemorate six residents of Calais who were surrendered to Edward III in 1347 after an 11 month siege during the Hundred Years War. They were to be executed in place of massacring the remaining inhabitants. However, Edward’s queen, Philippa of Hainaut, begged him to spare their lives, which he did.
