There are more than 6,400 species of katydids or bush crickets belonging to the cricket family Tettigoniidae, mainly in the tropics. They are also known as long-horned grasshoppers, to distinguish them from the Caelifera or true grasshoppers. They are primarily nocturnal, with strident mating calls. Many katydids exhibit mimicry and camouflage, commonly with shapes and colors similar to leaves.

Parc le Za is one of three small community owned and run nature reserves at Ifaty, all protecting remnants of the remarkable spiny forest and it's unique wildlife, and providing employment to local guides.
