Old Renault 4s are the commonest car in Madagascar and are commonly used as taxis. They look OK from the outside but are usually very battered and held together with bits of wire and string!

A more modern and comfortable version of the taxi-brousse. I took the red minibus for the four hour drive from Tana east to Andasibe. Tamatave (as written on the windscreen) is its final destination on the east coast. You pay the full fare to the final destination even if you get off half way - however, it only cost Ar17,000 / £5 / $7. My taxi driver found me the correct taxi-brousse in the chaos of the "bus station" then I waited about an hour for the minibus to fill up before we left which gave me plenty of time to observe the colourful chaos around me.
