A delightful little book about photography 100 years ago.

This was the first great age of focal plane shutter SLRs.

While both cut and roll film was available, the real quality was still with glass plates. Ordinary plates were mainly sensitive to blue and violet, and not to green, yellow and red. Orthochromatic film (still not sensitive to red) was a new extra cost thing, and panchromatic film was becoming available.... The simple rotating shutter - familiar from box cameras - and the pneumatic diaphragm shutter were common, clockwork shutters still were not very sophisticated or reliable.

Hand-and-stand cameras were constantly battling under exposure, even in good light.

The ordinary shutter speed (1/20 to 1/40) with ordinary stop (f/8 to f/11) with fast plates was barely enough to obtain a properly exposed plate under favourable conditions.

And lenses - oh those lenses! - had character and were human designed.

R.Child Bayley had dispensed with the Rapid Rectalinears in the prior pages without bothering to show samples; anastigmat was where the action was.
