This is the 1850's fort , Fort Tourgis.
On the weekend, a friend took me on a little exploration trip, with cameras, to this fort. I will post some of the shots soon.
It is in a state of slow decay.

As I mentioned there was a drawbridge on the fort. Here is the remains of one of the rollers. I cannot resist photos of rusty things! When you consider that this fort is open to the elements and in particular the full force of Atlantic winds blowing salt, it is in very good condition.

This is the main gate into fort Tourgis in Alderney. It was built in the 1850's and is one of 14 or so forts on this tiny Island!
There was a drawbridge over a very deep ditch, which is partly filled that allows access.

This is one side of the doors that would have been behind the drawbridge, still hanging.
Note the name on the door. "Tourgie" the Victorian era English spelling of Tourgis (Pronounced Tor-Gee)
The metal thing above the door is what is left of a railing on the defensive rampart above the gate, as can bee seen in a later image.

This is looking back out through the main gate where we entered. Note the rampart above the gate and the "Arrow slits" that people seem to call them, for firing out. (edit- I have read that they are called "Musketry Loopholes")
On the left of this image there are decaying troop barracks, and on the right is what seems to be more elegant lodgings! This fort is HUGE. and we only explored a very small area.
Note the collapsed railing from the rampart above (edit - It is called a "Musketry Parapet" in the book I have obtained)
