Saturday Self Challenge: Muziek in m’n oren

Afgelopen weekend verbleef ik in Assen bij familie. Zondagochtend ontwaakte in vroeg en ging een stuk hardlopen, voor het te warm werd om te sporten. Dit is een paar km oostelijk van Assen, in het Nationaal Park Drentsche Aa. Er hing nog wat ochtendmist en ik hoorde verschillende vogels zingen, leeuwerik, tjiftjaf, lijsters en meesjes.

Saturday Self Challenge: Music to my ears

Last weekend I stayed in Assen with family. Sunday morning I woke up early and went for a run, before it got too warm to exercise. This is a few km east of Assen, in the Drentsche Aa National Park. There was still some morning mist and I heard several birds singing, lark, chiffchaff, thrushes and tits.

Saturday Self Challenge: landschap

De Waver nabij de Voetangel. De Waver stroomt hier door het veenweidelandschap zuidelijk van Amsterdam.
Oorspronkelijk lag de rivier in een moeras. Vanaf de 12e eeuw werd dit gebied ontgonnen. Door inklinking werd het noodzakelijk om dijken en later ook molens te bouwen. Rond 1920 werden de molens vervangen door dieselgemalen waarvan er één aan de andere kant van de rivier staat. Een moderner gemaal staat ernaast en is lager gebouwd.
Het gebied is niet verveend daar het veen teveel klei bevat.
Momenteel is zijn de smalle en bochtige wegen in dit gebied een populaire bestemming voor (race)fietsen, hardlopen en ook voor motor- en autotoeren.

Saturday Self Challenge: landscape

The river Waver near the inn Voetangel. Here, the Waver flows through the peat meadow landscape south of Amsterdam. The Waver is a sideriver of the Amstel and mouthes into the Bullewijk which flows from the village of Abcoude towards the Amstel near Ouderkerk.
Originally, the river streamed through marsh lands. From the 12th century, this area was cultivated. The following subsidence made it necessary to build dikes and later also mills. Around 1920, the mills were replaced by diesel pumping stations, one of which stands on the other side of the river. A more modern pumping station stands next to it and is built lower.
The peat in this area was not dug as the peat contains too much clay.
Currently, the area's narrow and winding roads are a popular destination for (speed)cycling, running, and also for tours by motorbikes and cars.
And yes, it ís flat.

Saturday Self Challenge: evenwijdig

Spijlen van een trapleuning.
Voor deze foto heb ik het accent gelegd op het contrast tussen de belichte delen van de trapleuning en de duisternis eromheen. Om dit te bereiken moest ik daar in de duisternis zijn. Tijdens het foto-graferen heb ik mijn hand gebruikt om de invloed van de grote lichtbron naast de deur te verminderen. In de bewerking heb ik de invloed nog verder verminderd, ook heb ik het contrast versterkt.

Bars of a banister.
For this photo, I focused on the contrast between the illuminated parts of the banister and the darkness around it. To achieve this, I had to be there in the darkness. While shooting, I used my hand to reduce the influence of the large light source next to the door. In editing, I reduced the influence even further, I also strenghtened the contrast.

Saturday Self Challenge: reizen

Op mijn terugreis van Zweeds Lapland naar huis kon ik enkele uren in Stockholm doorbrengen. Hier de Österlånggatan, een nauwe straat in de Gamla Stan (Oude Stad), bij het koninklijk paleis.
In Amsterdam waar ik woon, komen de toeristische hordes aan het eind van een zondagochtend, en in Stockholm gebeurde dat ook. Al eerder zag en hoorde ik verschillende groepen toeristen in verschillende vreemde talen worden toegesproken.

Saturday Self Challenge: travel

On my return trip home from Swedish Lapland, I spent a few hours in Stockholm. Here the Österlånggatan, a narrow street in Gamla Stan (Old Town), near the royal palace.
In Amsterdam where I live, the tourist hordes arrive at the end of a Sunday morning, and in Stockholm the same thing happened. Earlier, I saw and heard different groups of tourists being addressed in different foreign languages.
