In this close-up scene featuring astronaut John Grunsfeld performing a spacewalk (EVA 1) to work on the Hubble Space Telescope, the reflection in his helmet visor shows astronaut Andrew Feustel taking the photo as he's perched on the end of the Canadian-built remote manipulator system arm.

STS-49 Mission Specialist (MS) Kathryn C. Thornton (foreground) releases a strut from the Multipurpose Experiment Support Structure (MPESS) strut dispenser during Assembly of Station by Extravehicular Activity Methods (ASEM) procedures in Endeavour's payload bay. MS Thomas D. Akers, positioned on the opposite side of the MPESS, waits for Thornton to hand him the final strut. The two astronauts are building the ASEM structure during the mission's fourth EVA. The ASEM structure, locked in at four corners to payload retention latch assemblies (PRLAs), rises above the payload bay. In the background are the Intelsat cradle, the vertical tail, and the orbital maneuvering system (OMS) pods. The pale blue and white Earth is visible below.

Pre-launch test of the Mercury-Atlas 9 (MA-9) on Launch Pad 14 at Cape Canaveral, Florida. The planned launch of Gordon Cooper on the final mission of Project Mercury was scrubbed on May 14, 1963, due to problems with the mobile service tower and a tracking site. The launch was successful on the next day.

Three crewmembers of mission STS-49 hold onto the 4.5 ton International Telecommunications Organization Satellite (INTELSAT) VI after a six- handed "capture" was made minutes earlier during the mission's third extravehicular activity (EVA). From left to right: Mission Specialists Richard J. Hieb, Thomas D. Akers, and Pierre J. Thuot. The three prepare to attach the capture bar which is tethered to Hieb. Thuot is positioned on the Remote Manipulator System (RMS) arm, from which he had made two earlier unsuccessful grapple attempts on two- person EVA sessions. Ground controllers and crewmembers agreed that a third attempt, using three mission specialists in the payload bay (PLB) was the effort needed to accomplish the capture feat. Behind the three astronauts is the vertical perigee stage which was attached to the Intelsat VI to boost it from the incorrect orbit it had been left in by a booster failure. The unprecedented 3 person EVA made a success out of the STS-49 mission's goal of finishing the delivery of Intelsat VI to the correct orbit.
