The road trip continues to the North Island of New Zealand! I figure this is a pretty good and safe place to explore... so why not get out and go for it? Even though I've lived here 10 years, there's still huge parts of the two main islands I haven't seen. If you have any suggestions on the North Island (black sand beaches... weird places that tourists don't visit... spiritual places... etc), I'm all ears! I'm mostly going up there to work on an art commission around Gisborne. I'm super excited because I don't know the area very well...

Here's a big question that's related to my son, Ethan, who just flew back here to New Zealand and is stuck in quar at the Pullman Hotel in Auckland for two weeks. We've had no new cases of COVID-19 here for a few days, which is good news, but here's what makes me question the stats... He was tested on Day 5. It was negative. HIV Aladeen. Anyway, he had to sign something that gave them permission to do the test. That is, he was allowed to refuse the test. Now, who would choose to refuse the test? I have no idea... but I think I read almost 100 people here in NZ have indeed refused to take the test.

So, here's my incredibly logical question: If, when you arrive in New Zealand, they are allowed to check inside your baggage for bio-threats, why can't they check inside your body? Your body is probably more of a threat than the interior of your bag. As far as I know, you can't "refuse" for them to check your bags. Also, what happens if you refuse? Are you set free after 2 weeks? Are you forced to stay in quar until you agree to be tested? I'm not trying to be bombastic or anything...just wondering...

I ask Ethan these questions and he has no idea what the policy is. And, why is the test even optional to begin with? (Also this is a favorite photo of mine when Ethan joined me on stage here in Queenstown... happy and proud Aladeen dad.)
