A golden hour view of Mount Carroll's business district from the intersection of N. Main St. (left) and W. Market St. (right). The commercial buildings seen in this view of N. Main St. form the western border of the Carroll County Courthouse square. At the south end of the block is City Hall, distinguished by its bell tower and rooftop warning sirens.

All of the buildings shown are within the Mount Carroll Historic District which was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. The Mount Carroll Historic District represents a fine example of a rural Illinois county seat that achieved maturity during the nineteenth century and that has preserved the qualities of that period up to the present day with few significant changes. The commercial core of the city is composed almost exclusively of structures dating from the 1870s to 1890s.

Situated in northwestern Illinois, 10 miles east of the Mississippi River and 120 miles due west of Chicago, Mount Carroll is the seat of Carroll County. The estimated population of Mount Carroll in 2018 was 1,578.
