The Spoon River is noted for giving its name to the fictional Illinois town in the 1916 poetry work Spoon River Anthology by Edgar Lee Masters, who was from Lewistown, about 50 miles south of West Jersey Township in Stark County from where this photo was taken.

A 147-mile-long tributary of the Illinois River in west-central Illinois, the Spoon River drains largely agricultural prairie country between Peoria and Galesburg, flowing through parts of Henry, Bureau, Stark, Knox, and Fulton counties.
