The Sangamon Valley Presbyterian Church in Cass County was organized in 1848. Since 1892 the church building shown here has been home to the congregation. Although the listed address is in the county seat of Virginia, this is a true country church surrounded by the beautiful farmland along Chandlerville Road.

Seen in back is the old Hickory schoolhouse that closed in 1949. The church purchased the property and has used the old schoolhouse over the years for Sunday school, Bible school and Children's Church.

Cass County is located in central Illinois WNW of Springfield.

This beautiful Gothic Revival style Episcopalian Chapel is located in Elkhart Cemetery on Elkhart Hill, one of the highest spots in Central Illinois. The Chapel was constructed in 1890 by the Culver Stone and Marble Company of Springfield as a memorial to John Dean Gillett (1819-1888), a prominent rancher in Logan County who was once dubbed "The Cattle King Of The World" by the London Gazette. The Chapel is owned and operated by the proprietors of the Old Gillett Farm, and is the only privately owned and operated church in Illinois.
