It is likely the former Ridgely Village Hall, located on Springfield's north end, will soon be demolished despite its historic roots. Built in 1885, the building once held a small jail, village offices and served as a community center. After the Village of Ridgely was annexed into the City of Springfield in 1907, the building was converted for use as a Springfield fire station. During its 131-years in existence, the building also has been purposed as a counseling center for drunk drivers, a real estate office, a liquor store and more.

According to a report over the weekend in the State Journal-Register, a judge could grant a demolition permit to the City of Springfield as soon as Thursday, March 16, unless there is a "realistic plan to preserve the structure." However, past commitments to repair or secure the building have been unfulfilled, and building inspectors with the City of Springfield have declared the former village hall to be a dangerous structure.

Further reading on the Village of Ridgely and Village Hall can be found on SangamonLink, a website of the Sangamon County Historical Society:

Everything Else. Check It Out!!!
Included topics range from man's first walk on the moon to small town schools and churches, and from Soft-Coated Wheaten Terriers (our favorite breed) to things that are abandoned, neglected, weathered, or rusty.
