Friends: Will be posting and commenting periodically while in ATX.

A view of downtown Austin as seen from the Pfluger Pedestrian Bridge that connects that north and south shores of Lady Bird Lake, a reservoir of the Colorado River. Google's beautiful new Austin office headquarters was completed earlier this year. The 594-floor building, with its west facing side shaped like a sail, is just one of several new and architecturally impressive downtown skyscrapers that are recently completed or are under construction.

To the left of center are the upper floors of The Independent, the tallest residential building in the United States west of the Mississippi River. The jenga-shaped, 690-foot structure became Austin's tallest building when it was completed in 2019. If you look closely in the distance behind and to the right of The Independent is Sixth and Guadalupe, a skyscraper under construction that already has topped out at 875 feet. And its reign as the city's tallest will be short-lived as construction already is underway on Waterline (98 Red River), that will become the tallest building in Texas at 1,022-feet when it is completed in 2026.

Austin is the capital of the State of Texas, as well as the seat of Travis County. With a population of just under one million residents, Austin is the 11th largest city in the United States. The Austin-Round Rock-San Marcos Metropolitan Area, now with a population of 2.3M, is one of the fastest growing large metropolitan areas in the country having added more than 579,000 residents since 2010. This place is booming!

A view to the northeast from the Roof Garden of Austin Central Library, a place where library patrons can curl up with a book while enjoying beautiful views of downtown and Lady Bird Lake.

Below is the 2nd Street (Butterfly) Bridge over Shoal Creek. This bridge is at the center of the larger Seaholm District Project which has transformed a formerly industrial section of southwest downtown Austin into a vibrant urban neighborhood.

The arches of the bridge are canted like a butterfly, hence the name by which the bridge is now commonly known by. It was designed by Touchstone Architecture in Miramar Beach, Florida. The bridge can be looked at in two separate but cohesive parts, the first being a standalone vehicular bridge and the second a pedestrian bridge. The cable array creates a clear delineation between pedestrian and vehicular traffic.

Reflections of a freight train as it crosses the graffiti-covered Colorado River Bridge (Union Pacific Railroad) in downtown Austin. The plate girder-style bridge was constructed in 1936. The bridge parallels the Pfluger Pedestrian Bridge from where this photograph was taken.
