Yesterday I posted two photographs of the two-story Turman Opera House that stood at the opposite end of this block until it was demolished in 2020 due to structural issues. This view shows how the west side of the square S. Front St. appears today in 2021.

A view of the former Turman Opera House on the west side of Virginia's courthouse square as photographed in 2015. Constructed in the late 19th-century, the opera house was renamed the Virginia Theatre in 1933. Now operating as a cinema, the theater was modeled and renamed the Joy Theatre in 1941.
The Joy Theatre closed in the 1970s, but was brought back to life in the 1990s as a dinner theater. By 2006, the theater had permanently closed with the building repurposed for storage, office and residential use.
Due to structural issues, the former opera house - considered to be a three building complex with a single facade - was demolished in 2020. The lot it was on now sits empty on the northwest corner of the square.
