The Amphicar, an amphibious two-door cabriolet, manufactured in Germany, holds the distinction of having been the first amphibious auto mass-produced for sale to the public. Of the 3,878 Amphicar's built during production, 3,046 of this number were imported into the United States between 1961 and 1967.

The Amphicar failed to meet initial sales expectations of 20,000 vehicles per year, and from 1963 to 1965 the cars were assembled from parts inventory. Although production ended in 1965, new cars continued to be sold through 1968 and were titled in the year sold.

To turn the Amphicar into a boat, all you had to do was drive it into the water, whereupon a propeller took over from the road wheels to provide motion.

In addition to the normal array of dashboard instruments, the Amphicar has marine lights and a bilge pump.
