The dining room was full of friends and family for our annual New Year's Day dinner. I had left the table to get a cup of coffee when I came upon Bella Grace, our most sociable dog, with her head on the kitchen counter straining to see the activity in the dining room (and probably wondering why she didn't have a seat at the table). I quickly got my camera and snapped this photo of a cooperative, but somewhat mournful, Wheaten Terrier. With this posting, my first Project 365 journey has begun.

For more photographs of our Soft-Coated Wheaten Terriers, visit my "Everything Wheaten!" (Set).

You are invited to stay and browse through my photostream. Here's a quick index to my Flickr site:

Central Illinois (except Springfield)
: Central Illinois (except Springfield): Photos relating to the middle section of the "Land of Lincoln" (except for the Capital City of Springfield) may be found in this collection. Every city and town I've photographed is contained within its own set, and rural (as in "counrtyside") photographs are grouped by county.

Springfield, Illinois
: All of my photographs of Springfield and the Abraham Lincoln Sites are in this collection. For the City of Springfield, there are separate sets for the Capitol Complex, Downtown (including the Old State Capitol), Neighborhoods, Parks, Illinois State Fairgrounds (and past State Fairs), and more. Photographs of Lincoln sites include the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum, Lincoln Home National Historic Site, Lincoln Tomb, and so on. Also in the Lincoln "All About Abe" (Set) are a few Lincoln sites not located in Springfield.

Beyond Central Illinois
: Other locales in the United States and Canada including New York, Chicago, San Francisco and Seattle.

In addition to my location-based sets, here are links to some "topical" collections and sets I've put together:

Automobile Photographs
: This is a very large collection of images whose primary, but not exclusive, focus is on American automotive classics. Images are organized by decade, by manufacturer, and by topics (such as convertibles, station wagons, muscle cars, etc.)

Barbers & Barber Shops
: Traditional barbers and barber shops are on the endangered species list. But there are still plenty to be found if you go looking for them.

Almost Everything Else. Check It Out!!!
: Included topics range from man's first walk on the moon to small town schools and churches, and from Soft-Coated Wheaten Terriers (our favorite breed) to things that are abandoned, neglected, weathered, or rusty.

Thank you for visiting my photostream - myoldpostcards

Factoid of the day: The "Michelin Man" logo has been around as a symbol of Michelin Tire since 1894!

Today I purchased a much-needed new set of tires for my car. While waiting for them to be mounted, I walked around the dealer showroom snapping photos of the various tread patterns (and how was your day?). My picture taking generated some strange looks from the sales staff who, apparently, are unused to customer's walking around with cameras taking close-up shots from different angles of their carefully racked tires! LOL! At one point, the store manager even walked up to me asking why I was taking the photos. I started to explain about "Project 365" but quickly realized my explanation did not quell his suspicions. Fortunately, I had the shot I needed for today's posting, and spent the rest of my stay in the waiting area with the other patrons.

One constant in my life is the daily trip I make to Grab-A-Java, Springfield's best drive-thru for coffee. On most days I am accompanied by Bella Grace and Jelly Bean, our two Soft-Coated Wheaten Terriers, who are spoiled with dog biscuits by the owner, Meg (right) and her super friendly staff (Laura, on the left, is a real sweetheart). It's nice to to go to a place where everyone knows you and how you like your coffee. On most days, they've already begun making my cup by the time I pull up to the window. Now that's GREAT service!

One of my lifelong hobbies has been collecting political memorabilia. While sitting in my den earlier today, I began scanning one of my bookshelves and found this clip-on doll of Michael Dukakis I had picked up during the 1988 presidential campaign. Dukakis served three terms as Governor of Massachusetts, and was the Democratic nominee in 1988. During the summer of that year, various polls gave Gov. Dukakis a good shot at succeeding Ronald Reagan. But when the votes were counted, Reagan's vice-President, George H.W. Bush, won the race in an electoral landslide.

Dukakis was a smart guy, but he failed as a campaigner on the national stage, and his campaign never figured out how to adequately respond to targeted Republican attacks. Unfortunately, a lot of the campaign tactics we see today in races from the state house to the White House can be traced back to the Dukakis-Bush race from twenty-two years ago.

Now in his mid-70s, Dukakis' name briefly emerged last year as a possible replacement for Ted Kennedy's seat in the U.S. Senate, but the appointment by Governor Patrick (D) went to Paul Kirk instead. So Governor Dukakis - at least the clip-on version of Governor Dukakis - now sits on a bookshelf in my den, spending its days rubbing elbows with my clip-on doll of Rev. Jessie Jackson, one of Dukakis' challengers during the 1988 Democratic primaries.
