Meet Matt Haynes, a traditional barber who has been clipping hair in Springfield for 44 years. A graduate of the old Springfield Barber College, Matt will have had his own shop at 210 W. Laurel for 24 years come the first of April (2009).

Matt was between customers on the day we visited his shop, allowing us a few minutes to chat. The Emil J. Paider barber chair in this view is not only vintage (Matt estimates it to be about 80 years old), but it is very special to Matt for sentimental reasons. You see, this was Matt's chair from when he attended barber college 44 years ago. Upon graduation, the school let Matt purchase the chair, and it quickly found a place in Matt's home for the next twenty years. When Matt opened his own shop in 1985, he restored the chair to active duty and it has been in use at his Laurel St. shop ever since.

While the Paider chair is Matt's sentimental favorite, this antique chair is the one that draws the most looks. Matt keeps it covered most of the time, but took off the sheet so we could admire its beauty. Matt has been over every square inch of the chair looking for a manufacturer name or other identifier, but has found nothing that leads to its identity or when it may have been manufactured. I know there are a lot of you out there who enjoy looking at these old chairs. If anyone has an idea as to the manufacturer and age, please feel free to post a comment.
