Constant and Main are the two commercial streets in this small village east of Springfield, with a scattering of businesses just south of town on Old Route 36. Grain elevators and a bar are the most prominent features of Main St. and, with the exception of two buildings on the left, Constant St. is mostly residential. This view shows the path south to Old Route 36 and I-72.

Dawson is a village in Sangamon County. It is located about 10 miles east of Springfield on the line of the Norfolk Southern Railroad. The population was 466 at the 2000 census.

I imagine the old building on the left was once a general store. The red brick building seen to its south is Dawson's Post Office.

Dawson is a village in Sangamon County. It is located about 10 miles east of Springfield on the line of the Norfolk Southern Railroad. The population was 466 at the 2000 census.

Underneath all the aluminum siding is the Old Dawson Grade School. Built in 1895, the building was originally a grade and 3-year high school. Students wishing to complete their fourth year of high school had to go to either Springfield or Illiopolis.

In 1937, the high schools in Dawson, Buffalo, and Mechanicsburg merged to form the Tri-City High School District. Beginning in 1938, students from Dawson could complete all four years at the new Tri-City High School in Buffalo. With the high school students gone, the building continued on as a grade school until its closed in 1969, and was sold to private individuals who converted it into apartments.

Dawson is a village in Sangamon County. It is located about 10 miles east of Springfield on the line of the Norfolk Southern Railroad. The population was 466 at the 2000 census.
