The starting point for our tour of Illiopolis is Visitation Church (a.k.a. Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church) in Resurrection Parish. The steeple of this Catholic church is the tallest structure in Illiopolis, and is easily seen by travelers passing Illiopolis on Interstate 72, which is about a mile and a half to the south.
Illiopolis is a village located in northeastern Sangamon County, and is about 15 miles east of Springfield and 12 miles west of Decatur. The population was 916 at the 2000 census.
