The Robert J. Dole Institute of Politics, located on the University of Kansas campus in Lawrence, was established to promote political and civic involvement in a bi-partisan and open manner. Sen. Dole, the Republican vice-presidential nominee in 1976, and the presidential nominee in 1996, was a student at KU before military service in WWII interupted his studies.

Sen. Dole represented Kansas in the U.S. House from from 1961 until 1969, and in the U.S. Senate from 1969 until 1996. In addition to his 1976 and 1996 campaigns for national office, Dole served as Republican Leader of the Senate from 1985 until 1996, which included two stints as Majority Leader.
