A view of the south facing facade of the Christian County Courthouse on the square in downtown Taylorville, Illinois. Completed in 1902 at a cost of $100,000, the beautiful three-story, white limestone building is further distinguished by a 40' high tower with clocks facing all four sides of the public square. The courthouse, Christian county's third, was designed in Romanesque Revival style by architect John W. Gaddis (1858-1931).

The Christian County Courthouse anchors the Taylorville Courthouse Square Historic District, added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1985.

This is the stained-glass dome inside the Christian County Courthouse in Taylorville. For decades, the glass ceiling had been shielded from view by a false ceiling. A restoration project completed in 2009 removed the false ceiling and restored the glass to its original appearance.

Taylorville is the seat of Christian County, and is located about 25 miles SE of Springfield. The population of Taylorville was 11,427 at the 2000 census.

For more images of Taylorville, visit my "Taylorville IL" (Set).

You are invited to stay and browse through my photostream. Here's a quick index to my Flickr site:

Central Illinois (except Springfield)
: Central Illinois (except Springfield): Photos relating to the middle section of the "Land of Lincoln" (except for the Capital City of Springfield) may be found in this collection. Every city and town I've photographed is contained within its own set, and rural (as in "counrtyside") photographs are grouped by county.

Springfield, Illinois
: All of my photographs of Springfield and the Abraham Lincoln Sites are in this collection. For the City of Springfield, there are separate sets for the Capitol Complex, Downtown (including the Old State Capitol), Neighborhoods, Parks, Illinois State Fairgrounds (and past State Fairs), and more. Photographs of Lincoln sites include the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum, Lincoln Home National Historic Site, Lincoln Tomb, and so on. Also in the Lincoln "All About Abe" (Set) are a few Lincoln sites not located in Springfield.

Beyond Central Illinois
: Other locales in the United States and Canada including New York, Chicago, San Francisco and Seattle.

In addition to my location-based sets, here are links to some "topical" collections and sets I've put together:

Automobile Photograph Collection
: This is a very large collection of images whose primary, but not exclusive, focus is on American automotive classics. Images are organized by decade, by manufacturer, and by topics (such as convertibles, station wagons, muscle cars, etc.)

Barbers & Barber Shops
: Traditional barbers and barber shops are on the endangered species list. But there are still plenty to be found if you go looking for them.

Almost Everything Else. Check It Out!!!
: Included topics range from man's first walk on the moon to small town schools and churches, and from Soft-Coated Wheaten Terriers (our favorite breed) to things that are abandoned, neglected, weathered, or rusty.

Thank you for visiting my photostream - myoldpostcards

Completed in 1904, Taylorville's former Carnegie Library was built with a $14,000 grant from businessman and philanthropist Andrew Carnegie. Between 1900 and 1916,105 construction grants, in various amounts, were awarded to Illinois communities through the Carnegie Corporation.

This handsome structure served as Taylorville's public library until 1988, when the current library opened. The old library building, sold by the city in 1990, is now a law office.

The former Taylorville Carnegie Library lies within the Taylorville Courthouse Square Historic District, added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1985.

A view of the historic Bolivia Road Bridge across the Sangamon River in central Illinois. The north side of the bridge is in eastern Sangamon County, southeast of Mechanicsburg, while the south end of the bridge - from where this photograph was taken - lies within northern Christian County just north of Bolivia.

This single-lane, steel-and-timber bridge was built in 1901 by engineer J. T. Garrett of St. Louis, Missouri. The bridge's main span is a Parker through truss which is a variation of a Pratt truss but differs from the Pratt in that the top and bottom chord are not parallel. The Bolivia Road Bridge is one of six remaining bridges in Illinois utilizing a Parker through-truss. Most others in the state have been replaced by bridges of reinforced concrete. Steel-truss bridges were a common bridge type of the time and were known for their strength, relative lightness, and durability. The Bolivia Road Bridge is 622 feet in length and the portal bracings of the bridge display ornamental trim and finials at the corners.

The Bolivia Road Bridge was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2004. The bridge was listed on Landmarks Illinois' Ten Most Endangered Historic Places list in 2011. In the spring of 2015, a single-car accident prompted county officials to permanently close the bridge.
