This little guy was the smallest in a pool of at 75 or more hippos. I particularly like his smile and fingernails.

I've given a lot of thought to the power of recency when posting images on social media. I believe I'm not alone in feeling a strong desire to share what I've recently shot, even if I have older, more compelling images never shared in my computer. I thought that to add some variety to what I'd share I'd buck that urge and mine my computer from time to time and post some images from the past. Here's a portrait of a Bat-eared Fox. I did a bit of research and it's a fascinating animal. It falls into its own class, can outrun a cheetah for short distances and reverse course at a full run. It's social and, maybe unfortunately, makes a good pet and is also hunted for its fur in Botswana. This one was at a den site Todd Gustafson led us to in Tanzania. Todd, by the way, ranks in my mind as one of the best wildlife photographers in the world and is a great, multi-talented guy. Thanks Todd. (Otocyon megalotis)

I've posted a couple of recently taken female American Kestrel images and have not seen a male yet this year. Here's one from the archives in a similar pose so you can see the differences. The topside is brown tones on the female where the male has feathers of grey. The most striking difference to me is the tail.

I was exploring Colorado, meeting up with a photography friend later that night who offered to suggest some places to photograph. I didn't know about Chimney Rock but knew he was out photographing on that road somewhere and decided to explore it. Serendipitously I stumbled across this location, where a few other photographers had already set up. Lo and behold, just after I got there my friend arrived in time for this view.
