Today I am beginning a new short-series on the City of Girard in Macoupin County, Illinois. Our last "visit" to Macoupin County ended back in mid-April when we said goodbye to the City of Virden which is located 4 miles north of Girard on Illinois Route 4.
The first view in this new series shows the former Illinois Terminal Railroad Depot, now restored and repurposed as a private residence. Evidence of the old rail line can still be seen here on N. First Street, one block north of the Girard square.
The Illinois Terminal Railroad Company, known as the Illinois Traction System until 1937, was a heavy duty interurban electric railroad with extensive passenger and freight business in central and southern Illinois from 1896 to 1956. Girard was on the Springfield to Granite City route (on the Illinois side of the Mississippi River across from St. Louis, Missouri) which was operated from 1904 to the ITR's closing in 1956.
The population of Girard at the 2020 census was 1,785. Girard is named for Stephen Girard, a naturalized American philanthropist, banker, and slave owner of French origin known for personally saving the U.S. government from financial collapse during the War of 1812.
