I took a drive up the coast with my boys over the weekend. We grabbed some pizza and hit sunset at Schoodic. We saw maybe 5 cars the entire evening. Pretty surreal but on the other hand kind of amazing to have the place to ourselves. Stumbled across a couple compositions I wanted to try so I dragged both of them out at midnight the next night to sit under the stars while I collected some pics. The intention here was to get the Milky Way lined up with this crevasse. Being in a hole it was kind of dark... I ended up needing to expose ten minutes at 1000 ISO for each of the foreground focus stack images. Took about two hours and the sky stayed clear the entire time. Of course as the Milky Way rotated in the clouds moved in as well. In the end I kind of like the way it turned out with the galactic core providing the illumination for the clouds and the sky center. Had to use a single shot at 6400 ISO because the clouds make it impossible to stack.
The noise and hot pixels made this one a bear to edit. I forgot the whole despeckle and “dust and scratch” tricks until the very end.
Any way you look at it this was a fun night under the stars. We brought blankets. I’m pretty sure I’m never going to do a night shoot again without a blanket. Game changing...
