Middle Harbor Shoreline Park is built on the site of the Oakland Naval Supply Depot, which was closed in 1998. The depot was one of the largest supply and storage facilities for the US Navy's Pacific Fleet. It is surrounded by the Port of Oakland, and has incredible views of San Francisco and the bay.

Viewed from above, it's as if the park has been designed by graphic artists with interesting ovals, zigzags, half crescents, etc.

January 2010 update: I have found out more about the zigzags from the park's website:

"Building 122, which has left its "footprint" at Middle Harbor Shoreline Park, played an important role in the Supply Depot's processing and shipping activities. This structure was a 190,000-square-foot warehouse (4.3 acres) built as one of two primary storage and supply facilities for the Navy's Pacific Fleet. Its irregular shape allowed for rail service on all sides. You can find the footprint of Building 122 by finding the clues in the park's landscape: look for a "ghost" structure marked by wall markers, zig-zag walls, and changes in pavement (even in the parking lot)."

1968 aerial photo of this area when the Naval Supply Depot was in its heyday.

1932 aerial photo, prior to the building of the Bay Bridge showing the railroad terminus, ferry landing(s), and lots of ferries heading to and from San Francisco.

A dredging rig at work near the mouth of Oakland's Inner Harbor at sundown. San Francisco and the Bay Bridge can be seen in the background.

The jetty stretching out toward the upper right of the frame was built by the Port of Oakland and the Army Corps of Engineers to reduce tidal action here, in order to restore some of Middle Harbor's original wildlife habitat. Sediment dredged from the Oakland navigation channels has also been deposited in Middle Harbor as part of the restoration effort. Some of the restored habitat can be seen in the bottom right of the image, and also here:

This part of San Fransisco Bay was originally covered with tidal wetlands. It was dredged many decades ago to create a deep water berthing area for ships visiting the Oakland Naval Supply Depot.

A much higher and wider view of the port than my previous shot, which focused on the container ship. The downtown Oakland skyline can be seen in the distance.
