As I glanced back at the gate where we got off the plane just a few minutes before, I liked what I saw. And I was happy to be off that plane, to be sure!

Evening view of Sultan Ahmet Mosque in Istanbul,Turkey. The mosque is also known as the Blue Mosque for its beautiful blue tiles inside.
It's very crowded in this part of Istanbul during the day. Tour bus after tour bus brings cruise ship tourists to this neighborhood to see the Topkapi Palace, the Hagia Sophia, and this enormous and beautiful mosque.
It's quiet and relaxed, however, in the evening, except when the silence is broken by the exotic and beautiful call to prayer.

A partial view of the magnificent interior of the Sultan Ahmet Mosque in Instanbul, Turkey.
This mosque was built in the early 1600s and incorporates some Byzantine features alongside the more traditional Islamic architecture. The mosque has one main dome, six minarets, and eight secondary domes.
It is still an active mosque to this day.

A restaurant worker slices succulent roasted meat from a spit on Istiklal Street, a vibrant, crowded pedestrian street in the Beyoğlu district of Istanbul Turkey.
This was by far the largest display of kebab I saw in my 10 days in Istanbul.
No, I didn't have any kebab here because I found this place just after finishing a big lunch at another tasty restaurant.
