This old Ford Plant, built in 1931, is 520,000 square feet and 1/4 mile long and produced 60,000 tanks during World War II. It has been renovated and now houses the Craneway Pavilion, a 45,000 square foot meeting and entertainment venue designed to accommodate 5,000 people. The building's largest tenant, SunPower Corporation, a large solar energy manufacturer, has installed a huge photovoltaic array which runs the length of the building.

Due to a northerly wind this morning, I was finally able to photograph this view of the building. The winds were strong and gusty, which allowed me to test the Kiwi Nighthawk fishing kite than Pierre and Heidy so generously gave me last spring. It flew well, as did my 6.5' Rokkaku outfitted with stiffer fiberglass spreaders (RET50) than I had been using previously.

The Richmond Civic Center, a classic example of mid-20th century modern American architecture, was built in 1949 and recently underwent a huge renovation which was completed in 2009. The revitalization project received LEED Gold certification for energy efficiency and numerous architectural and landscape design awards. It is on the National Register of Historic Places. Pictured here are City Hall (right), and the Civic Auditorium. More info

While looking at the bay from the terrace outside my office, I noticed that one of the huge car carrier ships was at the new Honda facility in Richmond. I went home to grab my kitecam gear and headed up to the port. The winds were light so I'm glad I had a big kite and a light camera!

The ship's name was Solar Wing, and there were scores of drivers driving the cars off the ship and parking them perfectly in the huge lot. Large white vans picked up the drivers to take them back to the ship so they could drive more cars out onto the lot.

I noticed at work today that another car carrier ship arrived today. Many Hondas!!
