This old Ford Plant, built in 1931, is 520,000 square feet and 1/4 mile long and produced 60,000 tanks during World War II. It has been renovated and now houses the Craneway Pavilion, a 45,000 square foot meeting and entertainment venue designed to accommodate 5,000 people. The building's largest tenant, SunPower Corporation, a large solar energy manufacturer, has installed a huge photovoltaic array which runs the length of the building.

Due to a northerly wind this morning, I was finally able to photograph this view of the building. The winds were strong and gusty, which allowed me to test the Kiwi Nighthawk fishing kite than Pierre and Heidy so generously gave me last spring. It flew well, as did my 6.5' Rokkaku outfitted with stiffer fiberglass spreaders (RET50) than I had been using previously.

In this side view, the Boilerhouse Restaurant can be seen under and in front of the large smokestack. It's a comfortable, reasonably priced addition to this area, which is my favorite spot for bike riding and rollerblading.

Also visible is a newly opened stretch of the San Francisco Bay Trail, jogging around the building to the left. The Port of Richmond is in the background of this view.
