User / Michael Layefsky / Golden Gate Fields stables and racetrack: site of Berkeley's largest COVID-19 outbreak
1,045 items
Aerial view of the Golden Gate Fields stables and horse racing track.

More than 300 of the racetrack's 500+ employees live in dormitory-style buildings seen in the foreground of this photograph. More than 300 workers have tested positive for COVID-19 and one horse trainer died in December, 2020, making this the site of the worst COVID-19 outbreak to date in the city of Berkeley.

Poetically, the parking lot of the racetrack and clubhouse building, seen in the upper left of the photo, is now a high-volume vaccination site capable of vaccinating 1,000 people per day, six day a week.
