This field is part of the vast Midway-Sunset oil field, the largest in California and the third largest in the United States. First discovered in 1894, the Midway-Sunset oil field has produced over 3 billion barrels of oil and still holds more than 500 million barrels in reserve. Steam has been used to extract the oil here for decades, and there are several cogeneration plants that burn the field's abundant natural gas to create stream which is used for both oil extraction and to generate electricity which is then sold to the power grid. |
