The view on a foggy, stormy morning driving down Old Volcano road in the town of Volcano, which sits ...you guessed it. On a volcano! These are called Hawaiian Tree Ferns and they can be over 20 feet tall.

This was taken down in a beautiful little valley called Laupahoehoe. It was right near a big memorial honoring a school that used to be down in this valley. The school, along with the entire eastern coast of the big island was devastated by a huge tidal wave in 1946.

I was fascinated at how quickly new life emerges out of the burnt, devastated, still smoking lava flows of the Kilauea Crater in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. It is so amazing on this planet that no matter how harsh and nasty of an environment may exist, there's something that lives there. Take New Jersey for example.
