A new 2 minute video of the swifts flying into the chimney at Wagner Elementary at sunset on 9/12/16 and 9/13/16. They spend the night close together and clinging to the wall to keep warm. During the day, one swift can eat as many at 20,000 (that's not a typo) insects per day. Here's some more info about them from Pilchuck Audubon...

The Vaux's Swift is a small migratory bird that travels long distances between wintering and breeding grounds. Its range lies along the west coast of North America from Canada to Mexico and, as is travels during the day, seeks a communal roosting spot to spend the night. Hollow snags in old growth forests were preferred but as these have diminished the swifts adapted. Today, large number of Vaux's Swifts use industrial size chimney stacks to roost. Little was known about this phenomenon until an effort to save the chimney at Wagner Elementary School in Monroe, WA, where this video was made, launched an international effort to understand more. Today, we recognize that specific chimneys have become essential roost habitats for these birds during migration.

It was heart warming to see about 100 people come by at sunset just to watch the swifts fly into the chimney. It's difficult for me to say how many swifts there were but there were more than 2 thousand counted in there recently.
