Daytona Beach Shores was first organized in 1960 by local business leaders convinced that a smaller community could provide better services to its residents. In the 1970s and the 1980s, the city saw a massive building program. Now about 80 percent of the residents live in high-rise condominiums that stretch along the Atlantic Ocean.

A resort and retirement community built on tourism and the service industry, The city has no manufacturing industry, but caters to tourists year-round with miniature golf courses and other types of family entertainment.

Architect Milton Bennett Medary designed the Gothic Revival style Singing Tower in 1927-29; the tower is set in the Bok Mountain Lake Sanctuary with gardens designed by the preeminent landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted Jr. A symbol of Florida, the Singing Tower rises 250 feet on the slope of Iron Mountain, now a Mountain Lake Sanctuary, established as a retreat for mankind, a refuge for birds and a sylvan setting for the Singing tower. The gardens began by Edward W. Bok, editor of the Ladies Home Journal and his wife Mary Louise Curtis Bok, founder of the Curtis Institute of Music. The couple spent their winters in Florida and decided to create a bird sanctuary on Lake Wales Ridge's highest point. Edward Bok, who was also a Pulitzer Prize winner is buried in a crypt at the base of the tower. Listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1972 and designated a National Historic Landmark in 1993.

Located at 1151 Tower Boulevard in Lake Wales, Florida. Please do not use this image in any media without my permission. © All rights reserved.
