While driving around the Los Angeles suburb of Mt. Washington yesterday, I stumbled upon this amazing art deco home. The house has all the bells and whistles of the California Streamline Moderne style that flourished during a brief period in the 1930s. The house was designed for Otto J. Kurtz by Iowa-based architect C.R. Spink in 1937. The architect is mentioned in several old trade journals including "American Architect & Architecture" (1909) and "American Contractor (1910)". Other sources indicate that he traveled to the West Coast and for a time was associated with one of the leading architects of San Francisco; he also designed the Bittendorf House in Davenport, Iowa, an important example of the California Mission style, The Otto J. Kurz Residence is located at 1308 North Nordica Drive in the Mt. Washington neighborhood of Los Angeles.
