Celebrity building contractor Carleton L. Burgess designed the French Eclectic style home for composer Jerome Kern and his wife Eva in 1937. Kern was one of the most important theater composers of the 20th century writing more than 700 songs used in over 100 musicals including "Old Man River", "Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man", "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes", "The Way You Look Tonight" and "Long Ago and Far Away", all of which have been adapted to become familiar tunes.
