The original mission was founded by Fr. Pedro Benito Cambon and Fr. Angel Fernandez de la Somera on September 8, 1771 alongside the Rio Hondo River in present-day Montebello, California. The current structure is the oldest building in Southern California, originally built in 1791 replaced an earlier small adobe church. Much of the building was destroyed during the earthquake of 1812, after which it was partially rebuilt. Over the years the church has suffered through several earthquakes, the last major one occurring in 1987.

Frank Warne Burr (1856-1917) may have been the original owner of the house however census records of 1900 showing him living in El Monte. By 1910 he was living at this Queen Anne Victorian located at 150 North Myrtle Avenue in Monrovia, California. He lived here with his mother Gardensia, his wife Laura and their five children, Walter, Lester, Myron, Clyde and Gladys.

The Queen Anne style cottage was originally built in 1887 for Reverend George Finley Bovard, the future chancellor of the University of Southern California. The house is named for Mary Ruth Hayes who was born here in 1907 and lived in the house for all of her eighty-three years. Located at 546 West Broadway in San Gabriel, California.
