Selbert Perkins Design and Taylor Design Architects designed the Modernist style Antelope Valley Medical Center in 2014. The LEED Gold certified project included sustainability goals included achieving a net-zero energy-efficient building, as well as lower total-cost-of-ownership, through use of alternative building solutions. The 10 degrees forward angle of the façade design provides additional shading from the hot summer sun. The facility’s unique design leverages the desert wind’s power as an energy resource but was also purposely sculpted to calm desert winds throughout entryways, walking areas and healing paths, to protect its patients and visitors. “Thrivewalk” pathways and outdoor-programmed spaces, including an amphitheater, inspire active living and connection with the surrounding community. The Healing Garden courtyard with reflection pool is intended to provide an area of respite. Located at 1600 West Avenue J in Lancaster, California.
