The Platform of Eagles and Jaguars resembles that of Venus and other constructions built in the Maya-Toltec style. It has four small staircases, one on each side. The balustrades represent plumed serpents which end with serpent figureheads in the upper part of the building. Prostrate figures are found on the panels and beneath them, eagles and jaguars clutching human hearts.

Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988. Please do not use this image in any media without my permission. © All rights reserved.

The sophistication of Mayan civilization is on full display in Uxmal, an ancient city located about an hour south of Mérida , Mexico In size and scope it rivals the more well-known Chichén Itzá, however it wasn’t inundated with throngs of people the day we visited, allowing for a much more intimate experience. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, its buildings are typical of the Puuc style noted for their style and decoration. Francisco de Montejo (1479-1553) was a Spanish conquistador born in 1479 in Salamanca, Spain. He left Spain in 1514, and arrived in Cuba in time to join Juan de Grijalva's expedition along the coast of Yucatán and the Gulf of Mexico. There he had the rank of Captain, and command of 4 ships. On his return to Cuba, he joined the Hernán Cortés expedition, and helped found the city of Villa Rica de la Vera Cruz with Alonso Hernandez Puertocarrero.

It would fall to Montejo's son, Francisco de Montejo ("el Mozo") to conquer Yucatán. He founded the city of San Francisco de Campeche in 1540, and Mérida in 1542. In 1546, the elder Montejo assumed the title of Governor and Captain General of Yucatán. However, by 1550 complaints about him caused him to be recalled to Spain where he died in 1553.

The monument to the Montejos is located at Calle 47 y Calle 56, Centro, 97000 Mérida, Mexico.
