Architect Ted Criley Jr. A.I.A. designed the "Rustic Modern" style house for Frank Thomas in 1949. The 4-bedroom, 3-bath house in 3500 sq. ft. is currently (January 2017) on the market listed for sale for $3,228,000 and described in the listing as "When Frank Thomas, one of Walt Disney's Nine Old Men'' animators, began compiling a dossier of requirements for his ideal house, the collaborative 1949 design between Thomas, Criley, and landscape architect Garrett Eckbo resulted in what Thomas affectionately referred to as his Rustic Modern'' house. In his modern house manifesto, Thomas called for the house to be warm and friendly, nestled in the trees, and looking as if it belonged there ... where convenience and practicalness -- or practicality -- are of prime importance.'' Taking these cues from Thomas' progressive vision, Criley incorporates them into a modern wood and glass celebration of slanting rooflines and asymmetrical layout, a design of both intimacy and light-filled spaciousness that relates effortlessly with its surroundings. Criley's use of wide, horizontal redwood planks are a pleasant counter to the volume of the tall windows which frame the Verdugo Hills while unassumingly blending into the oak forest of the gently sloping lot. The house is listed in the National Register of Historic Places".

The Frank Thomas Residence is located at 758 Flintridge Avenue in La Canada Flintridge, California. Please do not use this image in any media without my permission. © All rights reserved.

Architect Fred McDowell designed the Modernist style house for artist Karl Benjamin and his wife Beverly nee Paschke Benjamin in 1955. Karl Benjamin, a celebrated painter whose vivid geometric abstractions brought him international acclaim, commissioned his first home from a young Claremont architect named Fred McDowell.. At the time the house was built, the Benjamins were admittedly somewhat naïve about modern architecture and McDowell had been recommended to them by their realtor. Built in an old orange grove the home is an early McDowell design, yet exhibits many of the elements that would later become his trademarks.

Karl Benjamin (1925-2012) was a painter known for his vibrant geometric abstractions, who rose to fame in 1959 as one of four Los Angeles-based Abstract Classicists. The "Four Abstract Classicists" exhibition put his work under a national spotlight featuring his work as well as that of Lorser Feitelson, John McLaughlin and Frederick Hammersley.

The Benjamin House is located at 675 West 8th Street in Claremont, California.
