Architect Phillip Johnson designed the Christ Cathedral, formerly the Crystal Cathedral in a Postmodern style in 1981. Until 2013, the church was known as the Crystal Cathedral founded by Robert H. Schuller in 1955. After the church filed bankruptcy in 2010, the church and its campus became part of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Orange, located in Garden Grove, California. The reflective glass building was touted as the largest glass building in the world when it was completed in 1981.

Originally called the “Welcome Center,” the building is designed to compliment the Modernist style Tower of Hope (Richard & Dion Neutra 1966-1968) and the Crystal Cathedral (Philip Johnson 1981).
