The Iglesia de Santo Tomás is a Roman Catholic church in Chichicastenango, Guatemala. It is located in the market place of the town which is known for its pottery and contains the Chichicastenango Regional Museum. It was built around 1545 atop a Pre-Columbian temple platform, and the steps originally leading to a temple of the pre-Hispanic Maya civilization remain venerated. K'iche' Maya priests still use the church for their rituals, burning incense and candles. Each of the 18 stairs that lead up to the church stands for one month of the Maya calendar year. Another key element of Chichicastenango is the Cofradia of Pascual Abaj, which is an ancient carved stone venerated nearby and the Maya priests perform several rituals there.

Arenal Volcano aka Volcán Arenal, is an active volcano in northwestern Costa Rica located about 90 km northwest of San José. The volcano is conically shaped with a crater spanning about 460 ft. Geologically, Arenal is as "Pan de Azúcar", "Canaste", "Volcan Costa Rica", "Volcan Río Frío" or "Guatusos Peak".
In 1968 Arenal erupted for the first time in hundreds of years, destroying the small town of Tabacón. When we visited Costa Rica the last time in September 2004, we stayed at a resort near the crater and watched the lava flow through the evening sky. It was a spectacular sight we'll never forget.

In September 2003, my wife Donna and I took a couple of weeks off and traveled to Costa Rica; it was my second adventure to the Central American Republic, and I was quite excited to show off its wonders.
One of the highlights of the trip was staying at the Hotel Parador overlooking Manuel Antonio National Park. On our second day at the resort, we took an excursion down to the beach and were met by hundreds of squirrel monkeys. We were told that they could be quite aggressive if we offered them a piece of fruit to eat, so needless to say we left the bananas at home.
