Garmisch-Partenkirchen is a ski resort in the Bavarian Alps; nearby is Germany's highest mountain, Zugspitze, (9,718 ft.). I took a cable car.to the top of the Zugspitze during my visit to Munich in September 1972 for Oktoberfest. It was a warm sunny day in Munich the day I decided to make the trip, dressed only in a t-shirt and jeans. I wan't prepared for the bitter cold at the top of the mountain and nearly froze to death! The town is known as the site of the 1936 Winter Olympic Games.

The Höllental "Hell's Valley" is located in the southern part of the Southern Black Forest Nature Park about 18 km southeast of Freiburg im Breisgau between Hinterzarten and Buchenbach-Himmelreich. The Rotbach stream (also called Höllenbach in the upper Höllental) runs through the valley. "Hölle" is the German word for "hell". The valley was the locale of the Battle of Emmendingen in 1796, part of the French Revolutionary Wars.
