Ceuta is a Spanish autonomous city on the north coast of Africa, separated by 9 miles from Cadiz province on the Spanish mainland by the Strait of Gibraltar and sharing a 4 mile land border with M'diq-Fnideq Prefecture in the Kingdom of Morocco. It lies along the boundary between the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean and is one of nine populated Spanish territories in Africa and, along with Melilla, one of two populated territories on mainland Africa.
Since 1995, Ceuta is, along with Melilla, one of the two autonomous cities of Spain. Ceuta is known officially in Spanish as Ciudad Autónoma de Ceuta (English: Autonomous City of Ceuta), with a rank between a standard Spanish city and an autonomous community. Ceuta is part of the territory of the European Union.
Many years ago, on a month-long visit to Spain, I attempted to cross over the Mediterranean Sea to Morocco. At the port of Algeciras, we were advised that the sea was too rough and that there were no sailings available, but that it would be possible to cross over to North Africa through the port city of Ceuta. While the journey across the Med was rough but otherwise uneventful, the reception at Ceuta was another matter. Arriving in the darkness in a pouring rain, the customs "officials" opened our luggage and literally threw everything out. Wanting to travel on to Morocco, our transportation turned out to be a broken down taxi in which neither the headlights and windshield worked. On the narrow road between Ceuta and the Moroccan frontier town of Frideq or driver depended on the taillights from the car driving ahead to keep us on the road while sticking his arm out the opened window to wipe off the falling rain.
