Architects Palmer & Krisel designed the house for prominent Palm Springs builder Robert Alexander, who lived here with his wife Helene. The house and the Alexanders achieved celebrity status after an article appeared in Look magazine in September 1962 portraying the home as a center of Palm Springs social life.

Tragically the family met its demise when a chartered plane carrying the Alexander family crashed into the Little Chocolate Mountains near Indio, California on September 14, 1965, killing Robert's father and partner George Alexander, his wife Mildred, along with Robert and his wife Helene.

Crooner and actor Elvis Presley leased the house in September 1966. He and his bride Priscilla intended to marry in Palm Springs, however with reporters camped out front oft the house, the couple escaped to Las Vegas on Frank Sinatra's borrowed plane and married there on May 1, 1987. Afterwards, the house became known as the "Honeymoon Hideaway".

The House of Tomorrow is located at 1350 Ladera Circle in the Las Palmas neighborhood of Palm Springs, California. Please do not use this image in any media without my permission. © All rights reserved.

Frank sold the house after his divorce from Ava in 1957.

Architects Walker & Esen designed the Spanish Colonial Revival style El Mirador Hotel in 1927. Opening on New Year's Eve 1927, the resort became one of the most fashionable destinations for the rich and powerful of Hollywood. The Marx Brothers, Al Jolson and even Albert Einstein were frequent guests who enjoyed the relative seclusion and high standard of service. It was so popular that the area near the hotel became known in trade papers and fan magazines as the movie colony.

In 1952 new investors purchased the property and hired Paul R. Williams for a lavish remodel. Beverly Hills interior designer Helen Franklin collaborated with Williams to create all new interiors. Opening with a grand "formal dinner-dance," the hotel was even more glamorous, attracting a new set of movie stars, moguls and national politicians including various US Presidents. Beset by financial problems the hotel was sold to the Desert Regional Medical Center in 1972. The El Mirador Hotel Tower was designated a Palm Springs Historic Preservation Site (No. 1) in 1984).

The El Mirador is located at 1150 North Indian Canyon Drive in Palm Springs, California. Please do not use this image in any media without my permission. © All rights reserved.
